PC Gaming To Grow To $35 Billion By 2018

Those who think PC gaming is dying, may be surprised by a recent report. Open Gaming Alliance has released a detailed graph showing the projected growth for PC gaming through 2019. By looking at the graph, PC gaming goes from $26 billion in 2015, to $35 billion in 2018. Pretty remarkable numbers considering just a few years back, PC gaming was behind console gaming by a good bit.

Looking into the numbers further, VentureBeat notes that OGA got it's figures from research firm DFC Intelligence, in which they stated what they feel is the reason for this growth:
"In past years much of the growth in PC games has been due to adoption of the platform in Asia. Now we are estimating a potential 86 million PC gamers outside Asia that we have targetd as market growth drivers. These are the consumers that are driving spending not just on software, but also on PC hardware, as they buy expensive equipment to play, view, and record games." - DFC analyst David Cole
It appears that E-Sports and Free-to-Play games are causing a boom of not only hardware sales, but in-game revenue as well. Overall this is not a surprising trend considering more awareness for PC through Free-to-Play and E-Sports tournaments means more revenue for the platform. In the end, when you have a free platform that gives developers more room to innovate, players take notice a jump ship. Especially if in the long term that platform is cheaper for the consumer.
